Today the very mention of Jim Thorpe brings to mind an almost mythical figure, the Paul Bunyan of the sporting world. In real life, Jim Thorpe not only lives up to his legend, but surpasses it. First coming to acclaim as a teenager at Carlisle Indian Industrial School where he starred in football, baseball and lacrosse, Thorpe went to the 1912 Olympics where he won golds in the decathlon and pentathlon. He later went on to play professional baseball, football and basketball and has rightly gone down at the most versatile athlete in modern times. This signed legal document is signed by the world’s greatest athlete. Though un-dated, Thorpe passed away at the relatively young age of 65 in 1953. The 8 1/2” x 14” legal page has been folded under at the 10” mark and there are several horizontal and one vertical fold from storage. A small pinhole has developed in one of the folds at the top section of the document but this does not affect the signature. The document is signed at the bottom in black fountain pen as “James Thorpe”. The vertical crease just touches the “J” in James but does not effect its display quality. A nice signature of the greatest Olympian of them all. Thorpe family LOA. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
