In recognition of his last-minute game-winning heroics in the final five games of the 1970 season, George Blanda was named the Associated Press’ Male Athlete of the Year. This 14” x 17” parchment award has been hand lettered with “George Blanda” and “Oakland Raiders”. The parchment shows light edge wear and toning and there are two small holes near the top of the document, one of which was torn through to the edge. The second award in this lot is Blanda’s Northern California Athlete of the Year Award from the Citizens Savings Athletic Foundation. The Helms Athletic Foundation officially became known as Citizens Savings Athletic Foundation following the death of Paul Helms in 1957 and the foundation's acquisition by United Savings and Loan and subsequent merger with Citizens Savings Bank. The laminated wood-based award measures and impressive 14 1/2” x 17” and features the golden seal of the Citizens Savings Athletic Foundation.
