In recognition of the major part George Blanda played in leading the Houston Oilers to the inaugural 1960 AFL Championship, the team presented the quarterback with this framed award certificate. Measuring 8” x 10”, the award is printed on both the glass and parchment and is dated “May 9, 1961”. The frame shows some edge scuffs and abrasions from age and storage, but remains a nice commemorative piece.

Included with the award is an early and extremely rare Houston Oilers pennant. The 7 1/2” x 23 1/2” felt pennant has the early Oilers typographical logo with a red edge tassel. The pennant shows moderate toning to the white letters and there is some staining to the blue fabric, but remains in otherwise EX/EX-MT condition. We have not seen this style before and it comes directly from the family of George Blanda, the team’s first star. A very significant group from the AFL’s first ever Championship team.

LOA from the Blanda Family.
