In 1986, Magic Johnson was in between securing NBA titles for the L.A. Lakers. Having defeated the mighty Boston Celtics in the 1984-85 NBA Finals the year before, the Lakers - led by Magic - were bounced from the Western Conference Finals in five games by the upstart Houston Rickets. Nevertheless, Johnson turned in another fabulous season as he averaged a double-double (18.8 points and 12.6 assists) every night out. This lot features Magic's game-worn L.A. Lakers home shorts from 1986.
The Sand Knit yellow mesh shorts (size 34) with a purple waist band and side panels show solid game use with proper tagging residing on the inside rear waistband. A pair of manufacturer's labels exist: "Designed & Tailored Exclusively for the LOS ANGELES LAKERS" and the "Sand Knit" tag. Separate stitched tags also are present: "86," "1" and "32" to reflect the season, extra length and jersey number. The draw string is missing. The officially embroidered red, white and blue NBA logo patch appears on the lower right thigh area.
Provenance: This lot originates from a gentleman who has enjoyed a long and successful career in Hollywood as an agent for many well-known athletes and entertainers. His professional and personal network enabled him to amass a significant collection of memorabilia, nearly all of which was given to him directly from the athletes and entertainers themselves. All of these items are being introduced to the marketplace here for the first time. While our consignor remains anonymous, SCP Auctions will issue an LOA for each game used item attesting to its player-direct provenance.
