After 20 years of the hard, aggressive play which earned him the nickname “Mr. Padre”, Tony Gwynn’s body began to wear out. Leg problems hampered his ability to reach the fly balls he used to eat up, but his arms and batting eye remained as sharp as it was two decades earlier. Halfway through the 2001 season Gwynn transitioned to a pinch hitter and showing the talent that made him a star, still hit for a .324 average, the 19th consecutive year he hit .300 or higher. This home alternate white Padres uniform was donned by Gwynn during his last half-season as a professional ballplayer.

The white knit button-down jersey has “PADRES” arched across the front in navy and white tackle twill. Gwynn’s number “19” is on the left chest in navy tackle twill. Russell label is stitched in the left front tail. Navy piping runs around the neck and down the front as well as around each arm opening. The left sleeve has the Padres logo patch and an embroidered Russell logo in navy. A size “56” Russell label is in the inside collar and Gwynn’s number “19” has been hand written in black marker. “GWYNN” is arched across the shoulders in navy tackle twill and his number “19” is below in navy and white tackle twill. Overall the jersey shows good game use with several turf marks and light staining from use. Some areas of the jersey fabric show some piling and the lettering has visible loose threads. All the buttons are present and original.

The matching home white pants have navy piping down the outside seam and navy elastic stirrups which appear to be a clubhouse modification made to Gwynn’s specifications. The two rear pockets retain the original plastic buttons. The inside waistband has the size “40” Russell label along with a white strip tag with “19-40-42-31-01”. The pants display the same amount of turf marks and pine tar staining as the matching jersey. A great uniform set from Mr. Padre's final season.

Includes LOA from Alicia Gwynn.
