While baseball has many statistic-based awards, there is one honor that is reserved for a player who “best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team”. Players from each team nominate one of their own and a panel chooses the winner who is announce at World Series time. In 1997 the Padres nominated “Mr. Padre”, Tony Gwynn, to represent their club. As recognition of his nomination, Gwynn was given this 8” x 3” x 3” crystal and marble award. Featuring an incised image of the award’s namesake, the marble base reads “Tony Gwynn/San Diego Padres”. A small blemish marks the left top of the marble base, but otherwise this substantial award displays nicely. Includes LOA from Alicia Gwynn.
