The New York Yankees celebrated one of their own on Sept. 19, 1959. The occasion was “Yogi Berra Day” at Yankee Stadium and the grizzled backstop was being honored for his outstanding play behind the plate and with the bat. Still five seasons away from retirement, Berra had already accumulated three A.L. MVP awards and 12 straight selections to the Mid-Summer Classic up until this point, all while sporting the Yankee pinstripes. At the celebration, Berra was awarded this beautifully designed and engraved sterling silver tray measuring 16” by 12” high. At the center of the tray it reads: “YOGI BERRA FROM HIS YANKEE TEAMMATES.” At the bottom of the tray, another engraved passage reads: “’YOGI BERRA DAY’ SEPT. 19, 1959.” Eventually the owner of 10 World Series rings while playing for the Bronx Bombers, Berra passed away on Sept. 22, 2015, at the age of 90. This was part of the Yogi Berra Estate Collection in the Fall of 2016.
