Other than Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig there is no other pair of New York Yankee icons more beloved than Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio. Mantle arrived in the Bronx just as DiMaggio was getting ready to hang up his cleats, but they did overlap for the 1951 season and helped the Bronx Bombers to win yet another World Series title, this time defeating the New York Giants in six games.
This lot includes a pair of single-signed baseballs from Mantle and DiMaggio. The Mantle signature in blue ballpoint christens the sweet spot of a Rawlings OAL (Brown) baseball. Beautifully centered, the autograph rates a strong 9/10 in our book. The baseball shows some spot toning, but remains in EX-MT shape overall. The DiMaggio signature, which is also on a Rawlings OAL (Brown) baseball, is centered across the sweet spot in slightly lighter shade of fountain blue ink. The baseball itself shows significant overall toning but that doesn't take away from the strong autograph from the "Yankee Clipper," which rates 8/10 in our book.
