Nineteen fifty-four was a season of change for the Brooklyn Dodgers. After back-to-back World Series losses to the Yankees, the Dodgers stepped back and revamped their ball club in anticipation for another shot at the World Championship. First off, manager Charlie Dressen was replaced with Walt Alston. Alston would prove to be a great fit for the club and he would remain at the helm of the Dodgers for 23 years. The team traded and sold off all the dead weight and brought in a succession of youngsters like Don Zimmer and Rube Walker to refresh the lineup. It worked - the following season this renewed Dodgers team won their first and only World Championship. Twenty-five Boys of Summer have signed this MacGregor Dodgers logo ball. Among the Hall of Famers are Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Walter Alston and a rarely-used left-hander named Tommy Lasorda (who would take from Alston over as Dodgers skipper 23 years later). Other all-stars on this ball include Gil Hodges, Carl Furillo, Billy Cox, Carl Erskine, Don Newcombe and Don Zimmer. Duke Snider, Pee Wee Reese, Preacher Roe and Bob Darnell have been deemed clubhouse signed. The signatures are in blue ball point pen and the ball has been coated with shellac. The ball has taken on a warm, parchment tone with age upon which the signature display nicely.
