Lou Whitaker won American League Rookie of the Year (1978), three Gold Gloves, four Silver Sluggers, made five All-Star teams and won a World Series (1984) during his prolific 19-year career with the Detroit Tigers. Apparently, this was not enough to sway Hall of Fame voters. But “Sweet Lou” will always be a fan-favorite in the Motor City. Presented here is a scarce game-worn Turn Back the Clock to 1932 throwback uniform donned by the Tigers second-baseman in a July 31, 1992 road game at Cleveland. Lou had a rare day off until he pinch hit (flyout) in top of the 9th and stayed in to played 2B in the bottom half, wrapping up Detroit’s 9-6 victory over the Indians. He had another nice year in ’92, batting .278 with 19 HR and 71 RBI.
The classic-looking gray and navy pinstriped Russell Athletic button-down jersey comes in size 44 and is properly tagged on the left front tail. “Detroit” in lovely felt script lettering adorns the front with No. “1” in the same fashion on the upper back. No name is present. The matching Russell Athletic pants come in size 34 with a “WHITAKER 1” strip tag next to the manufacturer’s tagging inside the rear waistband. Both articles show light use since Sweet Lou played only one inning. Very nice modern throwback gamer.
