Mickey Owen was a journeyman catcher who played a total of 13 seasons in the major leagues including his final campaign of 1954 as a member of the Boston Red Sox. In that season, as a 38-year-old backstop, Owen played in just 32 games for Boston and collected 16 hits and drove in 11 runs. A lifetime .255 batter, Owen hung up his cleats shortly thereafter with 929 career hits, 378 RBI and four National League All-Star selections (all with the Brooklyn Dodgers, 1941 to '44) to his credit.
This lot features Owens' 1954 Boston Red Sox game-worn road jersey. The well-worn gray flannel, which shows outstanding game use and numerous moth-eaten holes throughout the garment, features "BOSTON" in two-and-a-half-inch-tall blue felt lettering across the front. Proper "Tim McAuliffe" manufacturer's tagging out of Boston, Mass, exists on the left front tail positioned right above separate black chain-stitched lettering that reads: "1954," "42" "2 In.," "11" to reflect the season, jersey size, extra length and uniform number. A separate washing instructions tag exists on the inside left front tail that simply reads: "WASH in lukewarm water with mild soap DRY SLOWLY at room temperature." Both arm pit areas sport six manufactured air holes and although seven buttons exists on the front of the jersey, it appears just the top two are original. Some small stains exist on the jersey's rear tail area. A classic old-fashioned flannel gamer that now reaches 62 years of age!
