In terms of Steel City gridiron wear, it doesn’t get much better than this: a 1950's Pittsburgh Steelers gamer with wear attributed to former lineman Truett Smith. The black satin-like pullover garment features “67” sewn to the front and back in yellow twill. A crotch flap features two rows of three buttons each, a vintage “Wilson” label and a size “44” tag. Absolutely phenomenal game wear is evident with pilling throughout and team repairs on the front, back and both sleeves. Steelers game worn material from any era is extremely scare. Prior to first surfacing at auction in 2015, the jersey was given to the previous consignor by former Steelers quarterback Jim Finks during the 1953 season. Truett Smith had been issued #67 in 1952, but he opted to retire from football after playing two season for the Steelers (1951-52). The jersey was likely recycled for use by a different unnamed player as was commonly the case in the early days of low equipment budgets. Images attached show the same style worn in 1955 by different players.
