This wonderful watch was awarded to Dutch Garfinkel for his contribution to the winning of the 1938-39 New York Tournament Championship in his freshman season. Garfinkel played for legendary Hall of Fame coach Joe Lapchick and in 1941 won the Haggerty Award, given to the top player in the New York City metropolitan area. After his college career was over, Garfinkel served in the United States Army during World War II. He then played for Philadelphia in the American Basketball League, the Rochester Royals of the National Basketball League (NBL), and finally settled in with the Boston Celtics of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), where he was a member of the franchise's first team in 1946–47. Garfinkel lasted three seasons with the Celtics, but his career ended prior to the NBL/BAA merger that formed the National Basketball Association in 1949. The presented watch is in superb condition, in working order and without visible major defect or blemish apparent upon inspection. The unique vertical-style watch face has “Bulova” on the front; gold casing reveals some minor scratches as does the glass face, but nothing that detracts from the presentation. Back of the watch face has “New York Basketball Champions 1938-39” engraved on a gold panel. Wrist band displays some of the expected wear but like the watch itself is problem-free and without major issue. Watch is preserved in an attractive 3-by-4-inch navy blue simulated leather display box with white felt interior and a 2 ½-by-3 ¼-inch black-and-white photo of Garfinkel that is affixed perfectly to the inside top of the box.

Includes LOA from Dutch Garfinkel himself.
