Right-handed pitcher Roger “The Rocket” Clemens turned in a Picasso-like performance for the Boston Red Sox during the 1986 MLB season. Not only did he lead the league in wins with a 24-4 record and ERA (2.48), but he struck out 238 batters while leading the Red Sox to their first A.L. pennant since 1975. Although the Red Sox lost to the New York Mets, four games to three, in a wild Fall Classic, Clemens turned in a season for the ages. To no one’s surprise he was named the recipient of the A.L. Cy Young award (his first of seven) as well as the MVP of the league!
This lot features Clemens’ 1986 Boston red Sox autographed and game-worn road jersey from that magical season. The gray button-down jersey shows the proper Wilson manufacturer’s tag on the left front tail with a flag tag attached to that reading [size] 44 with washing instruction on the back. A separate cloth tag reading “86” in black chain-stitching is positioned underneath the Wilson tag indicating the season. The front of the jersey reads “BOSTON” arched across the chest in navy blue tackle twill lettering. The Rocket’s uniform number “21” adorns the back in eight-inch navy blue tackle twill sewn directly onto the jersey. He has signed the left front tail in blue marker and added the inscription “Best Wishes…1986” with his autograph. A classic piece of Boston Red Sox memorabilia commemorating one of the most dominant individual seasons in pitching history!

PROVENANCE: Baltimore Orioles Clubhouse Collection - This is one of a collection of 12 jerseys in this auction that originate directly from the collection of a gentleman who served as the Baltimore Orioles visiting team clubhouse attendant in his youth in the early 1980’s. A dream job for any baseball loving kid, his position enabled him to serve and befriend many of the great stars of the era that passed through Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium. He was also a well-liked “gofer” for many of his hometown heroes such as Eddie Murray, Cal Ripken and Brooks Robinson. All of the game worn jerseys presented here were given to him personally by the players they represent and autographed for him personally. Prior to their offering here, these jerseys have remained in his sole possession. Needless to say, they are ideal specimens with regard to originality, usage attributes and provenance.
