Baseball Hall of Famer Rube Marquard’s major league career began in 1908 when the New York Giants purchased his contract from Indianapolis for the then-record price of $11,000. He became known as the “$11,000 Beauty” and made his debut at the age of 21. The hard-throwing southpaw would pitch for 18 MLB seasons, the first eight with the Giants before moving on to the Brooklyn Robins, Cincinnati Red and Boston Braves. He notched 201 victories, had a career 3.08 ERA and struck out 1,593 batters. Marquard was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971 by the Veteran’s Committee and passed away in 1980 at the age of 93.

This lot features a well preserved, circa 1966-72 “J. DeBeer and Son Major League” baseball that Marquard signed to the left of the sweet spot in blue ink. Underneath his signature he added the inscription “Hall of Fame.” His signature is clean and would rate 7-8/10 in our book.

Full LOA from JSA (#Y41417). Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
