Late Hall of Famer Junior Seau of the San Diego Chargers was one of the hardest-hitting linebackers in NFL history. This lot includes Seau’s 1993 Mackey Award AFC Linebacker of the Year trophy, presented by the National Football League Players Association. That season Seau played in all 16 regular season games, made 129 tackles and intercepted two passes. The striking award features a brushed silver statuette of a 9 1/2-inch tall generic player in a futuristic styling, resting upon a silver base 4 1/2 inches in diameter. That in turn rests upon a circular wood base 4 inches high and 7 inches in diameter. A 7 1/2-by-4-inch silver plaque across the front notes "JUNIOR SEAU, SAN DIEGO CHARGERS, AFC Linebacker of the Year, 1993 MACKEY AWARD, National Football League Players Association," with the Players Association logo on one side and "BBF" on the other. The trophy was sourced from Seau's Restaurant in San Diego, which closed a few weeks after his death in 2012.
