From 1972 through 1987, Gary Matthews played as an outfielder for five different MLB teams: San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners. He tallied a career .281 batting average, launched 234 home runs and knocked in a total of 978 runs. And his 16-year tenure in the majors all started with the San Francisco Giants in 1972. Offered here is Matthews’ 1972 San Francisco Giants rookie game-worn home jersey. He was a late season call-up and played in just 20 games that year where he batted .290. The jersey, which shows minimal game use, is sporting the proper “McAuliffe Uniform Corp.” manufacturer’s tag on the left front tail stacked in between the year tag (“1972”) and size tag (“42”). A washing instructions tag is positioned at the bottom of the right front tail. The team name – “GIANTS” – stretches across the front of the button-down jersey in black felt tackle twill letters outlined in faded orange. Around the collar and both sleeves is orange-and-black piping. On the reverse is just his uniform number (“36”) also in black felt tackle twill outlined in faded orange. The name stitching that is typically found inside the rear collar area has been removed. The following season Matthews would win National League Rookie of the Year honors after batting .300 with 12 homers and 58 runs batted in.
