Offered here is former University of Southern California running back Charles White's September 23, 1978 Offensive Player of the Week Award for his outstanding performance against then #1 ranked Alabama. White rushed 29 times for 199 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown scamper in the first quarter, as the #7 ranked Trojans went into a hostile road environment in Birmingham and pulled out a huge 24-14 victory over the Crimson Tide. As a junior in 1978, White was Pac-10 Player of the Year and a consensus First Team All-America selection as he finished with 1,859 yards rushing and 13 TD's, helping USC win the National Championship. He would take home the Heisman Trophy the following season before heading to the NFL. White is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
The trophy features a 12" by 15" wooden base topped by a brass-like plaque with an NCAA medallion (3" in diameter) on the top right. A second NCAA medallion appears to be missing on the top left. Etched in the metal is an NCAA quote at the top that reads "What one man achieved in the gridiron in a day, shall be reflected in the fulfillment of others throughout time." This is followed by "PRESENTED TO UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA - CHARLES WHITE - EARNED OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS - USC AT ALABAMA - SEPTEMBER 23, 1978." Metal has moderate tarnishing and handling. Wood is fairly well-preserved with a few scratches. There are drill holes in the corners from how it was displayed on the wall. Hard to find college awards like this in the hobby.
Includes Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum. The founder of the museum, John Hamilton, is a fellow USC alum and chairman of the USC Athletic Hall of Fame. Hamilton himself was enshrined in 2015 for his role in developing the USC Hall of Fame in 1994 as well as his many charitable endeavors, including the museum.
