The Larry O'Brien Trophy is the award given annually by the National Basketball Association (NBA) to the winner of the NBA Finals. The name of the trophy was previously the Walter A. Brown Trophy until 1984. The current design was first awarded in 1977, still under its original name, which was changed in honor of former NBA commissioner Larry O'Brien who served from 1975 to 1984. Did you know that before joining the NBA, O'Brien was the U.S. Postmaster General under President Lyndon B. Johnson from 1965 to 1968? This lot includes an exact brass replica of the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy that was awarded to the Golden State Warriors last June following their 2014-15 NBA title season. It was the Warriors' first championship in 40 years when Rick Barry and company took home the title in 1975. Led by league MVP Stephen Curry and fellow backcourt mate Klay Thompson (aka the "Splash Brothers"), the Warriors pillaged through the regular season to finish with the NBA's best record at 67-15. It was also their most wins in franchise history. First year head coach Steve Kerr took over an already loaded roster from the departed Mark Jackson and sprinkled in the right ingredients to lead the 'Dubs" to the mountaintop. They were 16-5 in the playoffs, capping the title with a 4 games to 2 victory over LeBron James' Cavs in the Finals. Just like the original, this trophy stands 24” tall and weighs 14 pounds. Its base measures 10” wide by 12” long and has the following verbiage engraved alongside the NBA logo: “THE LARRY OBRIEN TROPHY 2015 WORLD CHAMPIONS GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS.” Awesome memento for Warrior fans to commemorate a magical season.
