ADDENDUM: Reggie Lewis wore the jersey in 1989-90 even though tagging indicates it was made for the 1988-89 season. Teams would often carry over jerseys to the next season in that era.
The late Reggie Lewis played alongside fellow Boston Celtics greats like Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. He became the sixth captain of the Celtics, taking the torch from Larry Bird. In his first and only year of leading the team, he brought the Celtics to the 1992-93 NBA playoffs. Lewis died prematurely when he had a heart attack on the basketball court during an off-season practice in July of 1993. This lot features Lewis' size 44 Sand-Knit Boston Celtics green mesh road jersey (No. 35) that was worn during the 1989-90 season. It was a campaign in which the 6'7" guard/forward out of Northeastern University ranked third on the team in scoring at 17 points per game. The jersey comes complete with the black "Follow Through" arm band on the left shoulder stirrup. The Celtics incorporated the band in solemn tribute to the 1989 death of Celtics’ owner Alan Cohen's wife, Joan. "Follow Through" was said to be one of her favorite sayings. The phrase is embroidered on the special black band in black lettering. The jersey exhibits solid wear and includes the proper Sand-Knit exclusive Celtics tagging on the front left tail. A separate “88” sewn-on tag acknowledges the season in which it was manufactured. Based on the presence of the arm band, it can be concluded that the jersey was recycled and worn in the 1989-90 season, a common occurrence back then. Fraying and some puckering of the white letters (“CELTICS” and “LEWIS”) and number (“35”) on the front and back is evident throughout.
