Heavyweight World Champion James J. Corbett September 16, 1894 New York Recorder supplement features a large photo image of the Champ making a boxing pose. Supplement measures about 11 1/2" by 15" with most of that space taken up by Corbett's image. Supplement was meant as an advertisement for the book "Portrait Gallery of Pugilists of America " by Billy Edwards. Corbett won the World Heavyweight Championship title on September 7, 1892, defeating the legendary John L. Sullivan. In 1895 he retired from boxing, setting off a series of bouts among contenders that lasted until Bob Fitzsimmons was recognized as the Champion on March 17, 1897. Supplement has some creasing and small edge tears. Appears to be a 1 1/2" tear to right edge of original center fold. Framed to a size of 19 1/4" by 22 3/4".
