The late Don Drysdale was one of the most dominant pitchers of his era. A 6’ 5” right-hander for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, he compiled a 209-166 record over the course of his 14-year MLB career. It was in 1962, however, when “Big D” turned in a phenomenal campaign by recording a league- and personal-best record of 25-9 while also topping the majors in strikeouts (232) and innings pitched (314.1). For his outstanding efforts on the mound, Drysdale was the undisputed recipient of the major league’s coveted Cy Young Award which goes to the top pitcher each season. In the early years of the award, in fact, from 1956 to ’66, there was just one Cy Young Award winner named for all of Major League Baseball. This was the only Cy Young Award Drysdale ever won. The nearly 12-pound prize measures 13” wide by 16” high and features a carved, black base with a raised sterling silver design that shows a right hand cupping a two-fingered fastball. The silver nameplate on the award reads: “CY YOUNG AWARD Presented to Don Drysdale Most Valuable Pitcher 1962.” Since 1967, both the A.L. and N.L. have named individual winners from either league.
