The late Don Drysdale was as good as advertised when the Brooklyn Dodgers selected the Van Nuys High School (Van Nuys, Calif.) graduate as an amateur free agent in the 1954 MLB Draft. Spending very little time in the minors, Drysdale quickly made it up to the big league ball club and never looked back. In 1959, in fact, he was honored by the Southern California Hot Stove League for compiling not only the most wins by a Dodger pitcher that season (17), but for also leading the league in strikeouts with 242. This lot includes the actual wooden plaque that Drysdale received from the Southern California Hot Stove League. It measures eight inches wide by 12” tall. In addition, this lot boasts a second wooden plaque that Drysdale received in 1965 from the San Francisco Baseball Writers for being named the recipient of the “Joe Cronin Award.” The plaque, which is cut into the shape of the state of California, measures 12” wide by 14” tall. The award is presented for significant achievement. Drysdale posted a 23-12 record that season with 210 strikeouts and seven shutouts to his credit. He also led the Dodgers to the National League pennant and the World Series title that year.
