On May 14, 1968, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Don Drysdale began the first of his six consecutive shutouts (and into his seventh straight start) that covered 58-and-two-thirds’ innings worth of scoreless baseball for the opposition, thus breaking the old major league record of 56 innings set the great Walter Johnson. Courtesy of his incredible streak, which included fanning 46 batters, Drysdale was named the National League Player of the Month for May by the N.L. Baseball Writers and Broadcasters. This lot features the specially engraved, sterling silver award that Drysdale was presented. The seven-inch tall by 7.5” wide pitcher is engraved on the front with the following text: “Presented to Don Drysdale Los Angeles Dodgers In Recognition of Being Named National League Player of the Month for May 1968.” Near the bottom of the text is then-National League President Warren Giles’ engraved signature.
