In 1962, the late Don Drysdale turned in a season of pitching any right-hander would give his left arm to achieve. He led the major leagues with 25 wins, 232 strikeouts and 314.1 innings pitched. To no one’s surprise, the 6’ 5” 25-year-old was named the recipient of Major League Baseball’s Cy Young Award.
This lot features a special award that Drysdale received at the end of that season by The Sporting News. For his heroics out on the mound, he was awarded this beautifully designed and laminated plague that measures 18” wide by 20” tall. Outlined in Dodger Stadium blue, the plaque reads in part: “Don Drysdale, Pitcher, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cited by The Sporting News as the No. 1 Major League Pitcher of 1962 for his feat of leading both circuits in victories with a 25-9 record as well as in strikeouts (232) and innings pitched (314) while shouldering the full burden of keeping the Dodgers’ flag hopes alive after injuries disrupted the club’s regular pitching rotation.” The plaque is signed by C.C. Johnson, who was then serving as the publisher of The Sporting News.
