In 1956, during his first season of playing with the major league club, Brooklyn Dodgers’ 19-year-old right-hander Don Drysdale tallied a record of 5-5 in 12 starts. He also fanned a total of 55 batters. This lot features the First Annual Harold C. Burr Memorial Award that was given to Drysdale following that season as the “Brooklyn Dodger Outstanding Rookie.” The shield-styled plaque, which measures seven inches wide by nine inches tall, includes a gold-plated pitcher on the front following through on a pitch. A specially engraved brass nameplate is situated behind the figure of the pitcher and reads as follows: “FIRST ANNUAL HAROLD C. BURR MEMORIAL AWARD TO THE OUTSTANDING BROOKLYN DODGER ROOKIE OF 1956 DON DRYSDALE AS VOTED BY MEMBERS OF THE BROOKLYN CHAPTER BASEBALL WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA.” Note: Burr was a sports reporter who covered the Dodgers for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper.

Includes LOA from the Drysdale Family.
