Due to their extremely low production run, All-Star bats are considered one of the true rarities among the game-used bat collecting community. This bat was brandished and signed by Steve Carlton as he earned his lone Mid-Summer Classic win, hit and RBI at the 1969 event at Washington’s RFK Stadium. This Hillerich & Bradsby (31.8-oz/35-1/2”) “W166” white ash weapon was turned by the Kentucky-based lumber giant specifically for the ’69 All-Star Game, as evidenced by the block-letter barrel stamping reading: “ALL STAR GAME – STEVE CARLTON – 1969-WASHINGTON.” Between that detail and the pronounced center brand, Carlton’s black marker autograph projects (“9”) strength and clarity. The uncracked item shows appropriate single event use with bat-rack and surface marks. In the top of the third inning, Carlton doubled off Blue Moon Odom to drive in Felix Milan and stake himself to an 8-1 lead. Hillerich & Bradsby’s factory records indicate that the “W166” model was shipped to Carlton for the 1969 All-Star Game, but at no other time in his career.
