Despite being limited by the talent around him, John Elway's 1982 senior season at Stanford was still impressive enough to earn the future NFL Hall of Fame quarterback both All-American and Pac 10 Player of the Year honors. He also finished second in the Heisman Trophy balloting to Herschel Walker. Not bad for a quarterback who never played in a college bowl game. Elway ultimately finished his collegiate career as the school record holder in a number of significant categories including total offense and touchdown passes. Presented is a vintage team issued Stanford University Cardinals jersey produced during the period of Elway’s memorable senior season. The white mesh jersey, with ribbed V-neck, features the number "7" screened in red on the front, reverse and each sleeve. The name, "Elway," is screened in red on a nameplate above the number on the reverse. A "Russell Athletic XL" label appears on the left front tail. The jersey shows no noticeable wear.
The jersey has been consigned to this auction by Stanford alum that acquired it at a school charity auction in 1983. Remarkably, there are two accompanying photos from the event showing our consignor with a then 22-year old Elway showing Elway both holding and autographing the jersey. Elway’s black felt tip ink signature on the back includes his added notations “Stanford ‘83” and Denver Broncos ’83.” Also included with the jersey is an autographed John Elway Stanford University Heisman publicity photo inscribed "To Tom" originally obtained at the same time. This is one of the most intriguing, not to mention ideally documented, Elway signed pieces we have ever seen from his prolific college career. While not game worn, any authentic vintage Elway Stanford football jersey is a great rarity.
