With eight career batting titles, Tony Gwynn is unsurpassed in National League history. Save for Ty Cobb and Napoleon Lajoie, Gwynn needed fewer games (2,284) to join the 3,000-hit club than any of the esteemed fraternity's members. Offered here is an autographed bat employed by the San Diego icon as he inched ever closer to that milestone. With this bat, Hall of Famer Tony Gywnn achieved his 2,916th career hit vs. the Chicago Cubs on September 16, 1998. The knock brought him just 84 shy of the 3,000 mark. The two-toned Louisville Slugger, "B267" professional model bat is uncracked and shows evidence of excellent use. Several ball marks and stitch impressions are visible on the right and front barrels. Also visible on the bat is a heavy coat of pine tar that adorns the handle. Gwynn’s custom blue tape, used to enhance his grip, is featured at the handle, as well. Black marker notations of "B267c". “33-30-1/2” and "19" appear on the knob. Among it’s custom barrel markings are a silver foil rendering of a swinging Padre and the inscription "#2916"/3000 added below the barrel stamp . Gwynn signed the barrel above the barrel stampings in perfect silver Sharpie to project "10" strength. A Gwynn Sports, Inc. COA accompanies the bat signed by Alicia Gwynn. An additional LOA is provided from John Taube of PSA DNA (Graded GU10).
