This remarkable bronze statue showing a flying (what else?) Ozzie Smith finishing a throw to first base is a miniature version of the near life-size bronze of the Hall of Famer that adorns Ozzie Smith Plaza at the Cal Poly Campus in San Luis Obispo, Calif., Smith's alma mater. Calling this masterpiece a "miniature" seems absurd: How many miniatures do you know of weigh in at all of 21 lbs.? The statue rests atop a 12-by-8-inch polished red wood base, which features a plaque at the front that says simply, "Ozzie Smith." Weber, who also created the life-size Smith bronze that sits outside Busch Stadium, told Smith, "You spent half of your career up in the air. That makes it difficult for a sculptor to do something with it." It would seem he managed that difficulty in both instances quite nicely.
