The first 14 years of Eckersley's long career he was primarily a starting pitcher, 10 times winning in double figures with a 20-8 record while at Boston in 1978. The last 10 he went to the bull pen and became one of the best relievers in the business, saving 390 games, 6th on the All Time list. In 1992, as a reliever with Oakland, he was named both the American League Cy Young and Most Valuable Player Award winner. His 1071 number of games played is #4 in baseball history. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004.
