Buffalo's Randy Smith tossed in two first-half bombs and dominated the fourth quarter to pace the East to a 133-125 victory over the West in the 1978 NBA All-Star Game played in Atlanta. His 27-point performance earned Smith MVP honors in a game that had the West leading 66-57 at halftime. Julius Erving etched his name into two record-book categories with 11 free throws attempted and 9 free throws made in one quarter. For 37-year-old John Havlicek, a last-minute replacement for the injured Pete Maravich, this marked his 13th straight, and final, All-Star Game appearance. This very elaborate commemoration of the 1978 NBA All-Star Game is an 18" tall trophy with an hourglass supported on a basketball base carved entirely in solid wood. The hourglass is detached so as to allow for it to be turned. A small metal placard on the base is engraved, "Boston Celtics 1978 NBA All-Star Game Atlanta, Georgia." The impressiveness of the trophy was not lost on Auerbach, as it can be seen in photos on a credenza behind his desk in his Boston office (see left edge of image here, under hat). This is a uniquely designed NBA All-Star trophy, the likes of which we have not seen before. Includes a letter of provenance from the Auerbach estate.
