The playgrounds of New York have given birth to some of the greatest figures in the history of Basketball. It was there that Red Auerbach began playing basketball as a youngster on the blacktop courts of Brooklyn. He recalled that "In my area of Brooklyn (Williamsburg) there was no football, no baseball. They were too expensive. They didn't have the practice fields. We played basketball and handball and some softball in the street." When the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame was formed in 1990, Red Auerbach was among the first class inducted. Auerbach and fellow inductees Bob Cousy, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Connie Hawkins, Dolph Schayes, Billy Cunningham, and Clair Bee took part in a lavish ceremony at Tavern on The Green, where he received this superb trophy. No expense was spared in the making of this 21” tall, heavy (2” thick) lucite award, artistically designed in the form of a ball and basket. Accompanying the trophy is a framed photo of Auerbach receiving it. Includes a letter of provenance from the Auerbach estate.
