Around 1972 boxing equipment manufacturer Everlast began to supply Muhammad Ali with specially made equipment. Gloves, trunks, and headgear were produced exclusively for Ali by the company with the phrase, "Made Expressly for Muhammad Ali" incorporated into the tagging. The only other instance whereby the equipment giant had previously administered such exclusive labeling was for boxing legend Joe Louis. These Everlast training trunks date from the 1972-77 period and originate from Ali’s assistant trainer Wali Muhammad. The white satin trunks are trimmed in black and feature the exclusive Everlast tagging on the front of the elastic waistband. Moderate usage wear is evident including some light staining on the interior. The white satin fabric shows exterior wear, as does the Everlast label.
Rarely can Ali training worn items be linked directly to the source. In the case of these Muhammad Ali training trunks, a signed and dated letter from Ali’s assistant trainer Wali Muhammad accompanies that details his relationship to Ali and the fact that these trunks were obtained by him at Ali’s training facility in Deer Lake Pennsylvania in the 1970s. Also included are several pictures of Wali Muhammad in the presence of Ali both in and out of the ring. Also included is a LOA from MEARS stating their opinion that the trunks “have 100% documented attribution of having been worn by Muhammad Ali during the 1972-1977 time frame.”
