In 1957 Walt Disney parlayed the public’s fascination with the swashbuckling Zorro character, first portrayed by Douglas Fairbanks, into an immensely popular live-action series. Topps joined in on the merchandising boom, producing the 88-card set that you see here. This set was one of the first of the smaller-sized non-sports sets that Topps produced, and it was plagued with production problems. Since Zorro was shot in black and white, the set had to be put together from hand-colored, black and white publicity shots, and some on-set color photography. In addition to color registration issues these cards often suffer from centering and cutting problems, as well. Needless to say, building a set of this caliber is an astounding achievement.
This 1958 Topps Zorro complete set is rated the Number One Finest Set of All-Time on the PSA Set Registry with almost 60% of all the cards being among the finest known with nothing rated higher.
