With its first issue, Gum, Inc. took over as the dominant company in the baseball card hobby, as neither Goudey nor National Chicle would issue any sets in 1939. The 1939 Play Ball set was a landmark as it used actual player photographs and featured slightly larger card dimensions than those used by other mid-1930s gum issues. Joe DiMaggio, the league's premier star at that time, is the key to the set. This example of Joe’s card from the year in which he flirted with a .400 average appears in indisputably mint condition. Graded MINT 9 by PSA.
