1936 -1939 Mel Ott game used bat. Although a small man at 5'9" 170 lbs, Mel Ott carried a big bat. In 1945, near the end of a long 22 year career, he became the first player in National League History to surpass the 500 Home Run mark. Ott led the National League in home runs 6 times and led his team, the New York Giants, in home runs 18 years in a row, one of the few records that will almost certainly never be broken. It was not until 1966 that his record of 511 National League home runs was broken by fellow Giant Willie Mays. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame his first year of eligibility, 1951, with 87% of the vote. Evidence shows the offered game used bat was in heavy use between 1936 and 1939, a time when Ott led the National League in home runs 3 of 4 seasons, 1936, 1937 &1938. Mel Ott Hillerich & Bradsby Pre Model standard finish ash game used bat. 35 inch, 35.1 ounce professional model bat shows evidence of heavy use with a handle crack and a piece missing from the knob that have been professionally repaired. Some checking (grain separation) from repeated ball contact is visible on the front, right, and left barrel. Several ball marks are visible on the right, left, and back barrel. Cleat marks are on the right and left barrel. Oil was applied to the bat prior to the restoration. After a thorough examination PSA/DNA has concluded that the bat was game used by Hall of Famer Mel Ott during the labeling period. The bat exhibits heavy use and possesses identifiable player use characteristics. PSA/DNA has assigned the bat a grade of GU7.
