Today the name “Winchester” is synonymous with firearms, but back in the early 1900s the company manufactured everything from razor blades and ice skates to meat grinders and sporting goods. Though Winchester’s foray into baseball equipment was relatively short, the company produced some of the most beautiful and sought after advertising pieces of the 20th century. This three-panel display is among the finest. Measuring approximately 40”x54”, this piece depicts a ballplayer fielding a ball. The player is flanked by panels showing the extent of Winchester’s baseball line including a full selection of bats and a catcher’s chest protector. The vibrant colors and lively illustration style is why this piece remains one of the most collectible of all Winchester advertising. The piece shows general wear and toning from age and there are some small areas of staining to the left of the ballplayer. The three panel display has been mounted together and professionally matted and framed, making this a very visually impactful example of Winchester advertising art.
