Both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig had career seasons in 1927 – Ruth hit .356 to go with his new record of 60 home runs while Gehrig claimed the AL MVP Award for his .373 average and 47 homers. To prolong their tremendous seasons and capitalize on their fame, Ruth and Gehrig embarked and a unique post-season tour of the country. Instead of bringing their own barnstorming team, the two sluggers traveled with enough uniforms to equip two teams at every spot, with each star captaining their own squad. Ruth’s was called the “Bustin’ Babes” while Gehrig had his “Larrupin’ Lou’s.” This new format allowed ordinary athletes from small towns the chance to play on the same team and against the two greatest ballplayers in the land – essentially an early fantasy camp!
Many photos were taken to commemorate this once in a lifetime moment, but none are as fine as this example. That both the “Bustin’ Babes” and “Larrupin’ Lou’s” are shown in the same image makes this even more desirable. Taken by MJ Cohen Studios in Oakland, the impeccable clarity and near flawless condition sets this Type 1 example apart from the rest. The 6 ½” x 9 ¼” photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
