From Julius Erving, who helped legitimize the ABA and was the best-known player in the league when it merged with the NBA after the 1975–76 season, comes this spectacular "Dr. J" game-worn and signed Converse All-Star signature model shoe. The only player voted Most Valuable Player in both the ABA and the NBA, Erving won three championships, four MVP Awards, and three scoring titles in his 16 years divided between the ABA's Virginia Squires and New York Nets (now the Brooklyn Nets), and the Philadelphia 76ers. He is the sixth-highest scorer in ABA/NBA history with 30,026 points (NBA and ABA combined) and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.
In January of 1978, Dr. J gifted this shoe to Joanne Ham, wife of Steelers Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Ham. Dr. J has personalized his autograph on the solo left shoe on the outer ankle with the message "To Joanne from - Julius Dr. J Erving - Thanks for your Support - 1/78" in black ballpoint that now rates 7/10. The white leather sneaker has the red Converse logo on each side and 'DR J' stamped in red on the left side. Brown and red rubbing and scuffing marks are prevalent on the outside indicating that this shoe got some serious use. The original laces remain intact, albeit in a discolored brown all elements intact. The sneaker comes largely as-issued, right down to the delicate red leather graphic components. What a tremendous game used example from one of the most revered players in NBA history.
Accompanying the shoes is a matted 8" by 10" photo of Dr. J in his 76ers uniform sporting his patented 70's Afro. Again, he has signed and personalized it for Jack Ham's wife, this time writing in 9-10/10 black marker "To Joanne - In appreciation for your sincerity - from Julius 'Dr. J' Erving".
