Before he became an NFL Hall of Fame tight end, San Diego Chargers’ mainstay Kellen Winslow was a consensus All-American (1978 season) pass catcher for the University of Missouri. In 1979, in fact, the 6’ 5” Winslow was named the Big 8 Conference’s “Athlete of the Year,” which was awarded by the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission. During that fall season of ’78, the gridiron star helped the Tigers to a record of 8-4 after hauling in 29 catches for 479 yards and six touchdowns.
This lot features the very trophy that Winslow was awarded for his outstanding achievements that year. The gold trophy, which stretches 23 inches tall, sits on a wooden base that includes an engraved gold plaque that reads, in part: “KELLEN WINSLOW BIG 8 CONFERENCE 1979 ATHLETE OF THE YEAR Awarded for Athletic and Scholastic Excellence.” The well-earned trophy weighs six pounds. Winslow went on to play nine hard-hitting seasons in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers where he tallied 541 career receptions for 6,741 yards and 45 touchdowns.
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
