PR PSA 1(MK) ticket stub to the July 8th, 1889 fight most recognize as the First World Heavyweight Championship between Jake Kilrain and the legendary John L. Sullivan, the first American athlete to earn over $1,000,000 in his career, held in Richburg, Mississippi. This would be one of the first sporting event to receive extensive national press coverage and the last bare-knuckle boxing Championship held before the Marquis of Queensbury rules were introduced. Because the Governor of Louisiana banned the match in his state, an estimated 3000 spectators boarded special trains for a secret location, which turned out to be Richburg, a town just south of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In round 75 of the 80 round scheduled fight, Sullivan knocked out Kilrain to become the first World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Printed on the front is "Kilrain & Sullivan Contest July 8th". "No_" is also printed with "1500" in blue ink stamped right after. Some erased pencil writing on the back is the cause for the "MK" qualifier. Ticket does have multiple creases but the printing remains strong and clear. This is the only ticket, full or stub, from this historic fight. Slabbed PR PSA 1(MK).
