John W. “Bake” Baker played college football at the University of Southern California, where he was a two-time All-American at guard. He played in the 1930 and ‘32 Rose Bowls, kicking five points after touchdowns, and even kicked the winning 33-yard field goal with one minute to go in USC's game against Notre Dame in 1931. It marked USC’s first victory at South Bend. This lot includes a National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame certificate that was awarded to Baker upon his election on January 9, 1983. The award states: “John W. ‘Bake’ Baker, USC Guard 1928-31, has been granted the highest honors of the National Football Hall of Fame, in recognition of his outstanding playing ability as demonstrated in intercollegiate competition, his sportsmanship, integrity, character and contribution to the sport of football, this certificate bears witness that his name shall be forever honored in the National Football Hall of Fame.” The framed certificate measures 19” wide by 25” high and is signed by Fred Russell, former Chairman of the Honors Court of the National Football Hall of Fame.
