Hall of Famer Joseph McCarthy managed in the major leagues for 24 seasons. His winning percentage of .614 is the highest in baseball history and his seven World Championships are a record shared only with another Yankee manager, Casey Stengel. McCarthy's Yankees teams were outstanding. They seldom had a difficult pennant race and, by and large, they overwhelmed their World Series foes. In spite of being blessed with talented players, many experts consider McCarthy among the greatest managers of all time. He was a great double-play teacher, but his real strengths lay in his mental alertness. He seldom made the same mistake twice, missed little on the field, and had an amazing memory for minute details. Joe DiMaggio said, "Never a day went by when you didn't learn something from McCarthy." This watch was presented to McCarthy in recognition of the Yankees 1936 World Championship, the first of four consecutive titles he would guide the Yankees to from 1936-39. This Hamilton 14k gold wristwatch retains its original leather band and exhibits very limited wear throughout. The gold watch casing has two diamonds set on the reverse. The reverse is inscribed, "N.Y. Yankees 1936 World Champions Joseph McCarthy" with a crossed bats engraving. The original Hamilton watch buckle is stamped 14k gold. The watch is beautifully preserved in working order, housed in a period Hamilton case.
