The 1988 NBA Slam Dunk contest was one of those rare moments in sports history when two stars, at the top of their game, battle head to head for superiority. Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan had won the ’87 contest, but now the defending champ had to face Dominique Wilkins, the Atlanta Hawks star who won the contest in 1985.

The pair beat out their competition, battling neck and neck into the final round. Their first dunk in the final round found them tied at a perfect 50 points each. Then Wilkins scored another perfect 50 to Jordan’s 47. Wilkins’ next and final dunk earned 45 points from the judges while Jordan countered with a perfect 50 to take the title. In this action shot snapped by photographer Dale E. Tait, Jordan is captured hanging off the rim after sinking another slam dunk on his way to winning the second of his back-to-back slam dunk titles.

The front of the photo shows edge wear and some rounding and creasing to the corners. There are some surface abrasions to the image, but this does not distract from the visual impact of the shot. The reverse of the photo has handwritten Dale E. Tait photo credit and notations as to the event and date. A red “32” marked sticker and Sporting News hologram are affixed.

The photo has been encapsulated and graded an Authentic Type 1 by PSA.
