The late George Mikan’s professional basketball career lasted from 1948 to 1956. During that nine-year stretch, the 6’ 10” perennial All-Star center led the then-Minneapolis Lakers to five league titles between 1949 and ’54. A pioneer at his position, Mikan earned the nickname “Mr. Basketball” as he led the league in scoring three different seasons (1949 through ‘51).   This lot features a special award that Mikan received six years after his retirement for his stellar play and contributions to roundball. The wooden plaque, which features a gold-colored metallic basketball player taking a shot, stretches 15 inches tall and 10 inches wide. It was awarded to Mikan at the 12th Annual NBA All-Star Game. It boasts a pair of gold stars flanking an engraved gold plaque that reads: “GEORGE MIKAN FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION TO PRO BASKETBALL PRESENTED 12TH NBA ALL-STAR GAME ST. LOUIS, MO. JAN. 16, 1962.” Mikan signed the right side of the plaque in black marker and added his uniform number “99” beneath his signature.

Item was sourced directly from George Mikan's estate. Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
