As a student-athlete at DePaul University, George Mikan turned heads. Standing 6’ 10” tall, he became a standout basketball player for the Blue Demons under the direction of head coach Ray Meyer. Self-admittedly clumsy at the start, Mikan turned into an All-America selection who went on to become an NBA legend. This lot features an autographed trophy that Mikan was awarded upon his 1945-46 selection to the True Magazine’s All-American Basketball Team.

Named the Helms NCAA College Player of the Year twice (1944 and ’45), Mikan was a three-time All-American who led DePaul to the NIT title in 1945. He led the nation in scoring with 23.9 points per game in 1944-45 and 23.1 in 1945-46. When DePaul won the 1945 National Invitation Tournament, Mikan was named Most Valuable Player after scoring 120 points in three games. The aged wooden trophy offered here stands 13 inches tall and 10.5 inches wide. It feature a gold-colored basketball player in the center splitting two columns with an engraved brass plaque at the top that reads: “TRUE MAGAZINE All AMERICAN BASKETBALL TEAM 1945-46 GEORGE MIKAN, DePAUL, Selected by the Nation’s Leading Writers, Coaches and Sportscasters.” Beneath the featured player is a separate brass plaque that reads: “SPONSORED BY FAWCETT PUBLICATIONS.” Mikan has signed the base of the trophy in black marker.

Acquired directly from Mikan estate. Includes LOA signed by George Mikan. Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
