Former Minneapolis Lakers standout center George Mikan was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959. The 6’ 10” Mikan, who passed away in 2012, was the league’s true pioneer at his position. This lot features Mikan’s Hall of Fame induction plaque and medallion. The 18" by 18" blue plaque features a bio of his career, including statistics and records, plus a 5" by 6" photo of Mikan in action demonstrating his favorite hook shot during his playing days in Minneapolis. The metal plaque weighs 2.5 pounds and is in NM-MT condition. The circular metal medallion measures 12" in diameter and 1/2" thick, and weighs approximately 1.5 pounds. It features a three-dimensional, head-and-shoulders portrait of a bespectacled Mikan in uniform. The verso of the medallion has two support bars that once held the medallion onto the wall at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. It also includes a piece of masking tape with "MIKAN" spelled out in black Sharpie. The oversized medallion remains in NM-MT condition.

Item was sourced from Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame after the museum moved in 2002.
