Graded PSA PR 1. This ultra rare Star Player Candy card of Lou Gehrig is one of only four copies in existence on the PSA pop report as of this writing. There is only one copy graded higher, making this one of the truly rarer cards in existence. Candy cards such as this one are notorious for being less prevalant in the hobby as they were most likely distributed to children inside candy wrappers and likely ended up being placed in bicycle spokes. Although this manufacturer is not identified, advanced collectors have always referred to these as the Star Player Candy cards. There are currently only three players known to exist on the 1929 Star Player Candy Series including Gehrig, Ruth and Walter Johnson. The sepia-toned card measures 1-7/8" x 2-7/8" and are printed on thin stock. Each card in this series differs from other candy issues from the era in that they all have short biographies printed on the reverse as opposed to the typical blank backs of the day. This copy is creased and weathered but the image of Gehrig is still really strong for the grade. This is an extremely rare copy of Lou Gehrig from this unusual but highly coveted candy series.
