The late Ernie Barnes knew all about war games. As a former offensive lineman for the then-New York Titans, San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos of the AFL, Barnes spent ample time in the trenches throwing blocks and impeding the advancement of defensive linemen on his various quarterback. At the same time, Barnes was becoming one of the country’s greatest artists by using elongation in the multiple pieces he painted depicting the violence and agony of the game he loved so much.

This lot features a remarkable original oil-on-canvas painting that Barnes created entitled “The American War Game.” It portrays yet another violent football scene, one in which the opposing bodies are completely intertwined as a result of a bruising, bone-shattering tackle of a ball carrier. Utilizing red, white and blue to add to the patriotic theme, the oversized painting measures 53” wide by 54.5” high and was hung for many years inside the prestigious San Diego Hall of Champions. Barnes, who passed away in 2009, signed the treasured painting on the bottom right corner in white paint.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
